"Edith Stein Beyond Descartes: Empathy as Ground for Knowledge" was a lecture given at the Franciscan University of Steubenville by Rocco Buttiglione.

About the Presenter

Rocco Buttiglione has held professorships at the International Academy of Philosophy in Liechtenstein and Saint Pius V University in Rome and has been a member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Science. He has lectured internationally and is on the editorial boards of many Italian and foreign journals.

In the early 1990s, Buttiglione helped to form an Italian political party, the Christian Democratic Union and since 1994 has served in the Chamber of Deputies in the Italian Parliament. Since 1999 he has been a member of the European Parliament, and in 2001 he was appointed by Italy's President Silvio Berlusconi to be Minister of European Affairs. He also serves on the Acton Institute's board of advisors.

What: Presentation by Prof. Buttiglione: “My Friendship with a Saint: What Blessed John Paul II Taught me about Christian Witness.” Inaugural Dietrich and Alice von Hildebrand Lecture on Philosophy and Culture. Followed by reception in foyer of the Gallery.

What: Breakfast with Franciscan students in the Center for Leadership. Brief opening remarks by Prof. Buttiglione on any topic connected to leadership.

What: Prof. Buttiglione serves as guest lecturer in Dr. John Crosby’s graduate course: “Selected Issues in the Philosophy of the Person: The Problem of Embodiment.” Students will have prepared selections from Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, Part I.

6:00pm:
What: Prof. Buttiglione guest of honor at “discussion dinner” hosted by Legacy Project with Fr. Sean Sheridan, TOR, and members of the Franciscan faculty and administration.
