Otto von Habsburg

Otto von Habsburg is the eldest son of Charles I, the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Born in 1912, he still tirelessly campaigns in the cause of European unity. Now retired from the European Parliament (he was a Member of the European Parliament from 1979, when direct elections first took place, until 1999), he is fluent in the major languages of Europe (and Hungarian), a tireless campaigner, speaker and producer of memoranda and position papers in its cause. From the early 1930s, he tenaciously opposed totalitarianism, both that of the Nazis and the Communist empire.
